Waves

The best waves for surfing

Popoyo, on Nicaragua's Pacific coast, is one of the most sought-after spots in the region for those looking for a surf trip truly focused on surfing. Here, the rhythm is simple: wake up, check the ocean, get in the water, and repeat. It's known for its consistency and the variety of waves in the surrounding area. There are more accessible options for intermediate surfers, but also more challenging waves for those with experience seeking more intensity. It's a destination where you can have multiple sessions, experience different conditions, and spend entire days focused on improving your skills in the water.
Popoyo
Seasons of the year

What's the best time
to enjoy the waves?

Popoyo is one of those rare destinations where surfing works almost all year round. Consistency is one of its greatest assets, and there are always good chances of finding waves. However, from December to April, the ocean tends to be less powerful and offers more accessible conditions, making this period an excellent time for developing surfers or those looking for a more comfortable surf trip.

From May onwards, with the more regular arrival of south swells, Popoyo gains more size, more energy, and a more challenging profile, making it especially appealing to intermediate and advanced surfers. This is when the destination reveals its most powerful side, with a higher probability of catching quality waves, although also with more people in the water.

Tips

Some tips and material that we recommend

Surfboards

A shortboard with good volume or a fish works well on more maneuverable days and at beach breaks. For experienced surfers and bigger days, a longer, more stable board can be useful, especially when the south swell hits hard. For beginners, a funboard or longboard is the safest choice for areas like Beginner Bay.

Surf Gear

It's worth bringing booties, as some waves break over reef. Also bring an extra leash, fins, a fin key, warm water wax, a long-sleeved rash guard, and a small repair kit. On bigger surf days, make sure to assess your skill level before heading out to more challenging spots.

Sunscreen and Sunglasses

The sun in Nicaragua is strong year-round, so bring water-resistant sunscreen, preferably reef-safe, a hat, sunglasses, and light clothing. A long-sleeved rash guard is very useful for long sessions and to prevent sunburn in the water.

Drinking Water

Avoid drinking tap water and always opt for bottled water, even for brushing your teeth.

Transportation

Popoyo has a rural setting, with dirt roads and journeys that can take longer than they seem. It's best to arrange transfers in advance or rent a car, preferably one with good ground clearance, to explore nearby beaches and spots with more freedom.

Personal First Aid Kit

Bring essential or regular medications, insect repellent with DEET ≥ 50%, repellent specifically for clothing, band-aids, antiseptic, pain relievers, rehydration salts, and cream for irritations or small cuts. As the destination is tropical, repellent is especially important, particularly in the late afternoon and in more humid areas.

Travel Health Consultation

Anyone planning to travel to tropical countries should schedule a consultation with a tropical medicine specialist to assess health risks and clarify any questions.

Documents and Money

Don't forget your passport, valid for at least 6 months from your travel date, your visa (if required), credit/debit cards, and some US dollars, which are widely accepted.

Cameras and drones

To capture the epic waves and stunning landscapes, a waterproof camera is essential. If you enjoy filming with a drone, be aware of the mandatory authorization you'll need to request from the entity that governs air navigation in the Maldives.

FAQs

Clarify some doubts about Vaccines, Passport and Visa

What types of visas are available?

For travelers with a Portuguese passport, a visa is generally not required for tourism in Nicaragua for stays of up to 90 days. Upon entry, a passport with at least 6 months' validity is required, as well as the purchase of a tourist card, which is usually paid for upon arrival. Even so, it is always advisable to confirm the conditions before traveling.

What should I know about Customs?

You should avoid carrying prohibited or restricted items, such as drugs, weapons, animal or plant products without authorization, and goods in commercial quantities. If you are bringing a drone, check the rules beforehand, as the entry and use of this type of equipment may be limited or prohibited.

What about money? Do I need to exchange it for the local currency?

The official currency of Nicaragua is the córdoba, but the US dollar is widely used in tourist areas. For Popoyo, it is best to bring some cash in dollars, preferably in small denominations, and exchange or withdraw córdobas when necessary. Cards may be accepted at some accommodations and restaurants, but their use is more limited in rural areas.

What health precautions should I take?

It is advisable to schedule a travel health consultation before your departure. Nicaragua is a tropical destination where there may be risks associated with mosquitoes, such as dengue and malaria in some areas. Bring repellent, sunscreen, essential medications, and drink only bottled or filtered water.

What about internet and phone access?

There is Wi-Fi in many accommodations, but the connection quality can vary, especially in more remote areas like Popoyo. If you need a more stable connection, consider buying a local SIM card or using an eSIM with mobile data. Always confirm coverage with your accommodation before traveling.

What local traditions do I need to know about?

Popoyo has a rural, simple, and laid-back atmosphere, closely tied to surfing, the beach, and the local community. Respect the destination's relaxed pace, support local businesses, avoid leaving trash on the beach, and be mindful of the customs of the communities you visit.

Do I need my own surf equipment?

Not necessarily. In Popoyo, there are rental options and surf schools, but if you have a specific board you like to surf with, it may be worth bringing it. For more experienced surfers, it is important to choose your gear carefully, as some waves can be strong, fast, and break over reef.

What should I pack?

Pack lightweight clothing, a long-sleeved rash guard, water-resistant sunscreen, insect repellent with at least 50% DEET, flip-flops, comfortable footwear, swimwear, a hat, and a small personal first-aid kit. If you are traveling during the rainy season, between May and October, a light raincoat may also come in handy.

How do I get there?

Managua International Airport receives all international flights, and from there, you can take a car to Tola/Popoyo.
