Waves

The best waves for surfing

The main surfing spots are located on the 3 largest islands of the archipelago: Isla Colón (main island), Isla Carenero and Isla Bastimentos. A very easy, fast and economical way to travel between them, since they are a short distance from each other through boat transfers.

Seasons of the year

What's the best time
to enjoy the waves?

The months of December to March are the best time to surf in Bocas Del Toro. The undulations of the Northern Hemisphere reach the coast and bring waves with 1 to 4 meters. In the months of May and June it is common to have smaller waves, with 1 to 2 meters.

The month of July, the season of hurricanes in the Caribbean Sea, can sometimes bring a good ripple to the region. Most of the waves break on coral bottom or sand bottom. The most accessible waves of Bocas del Toro are on the islands of Colón, Carenero and Bastimentos.

Tips

Some tips and material that we recommend

Surfboards

In Bocas del Toro, a shortboard or fish usually works well in the fastest and steepest spots. If you are learning, a funboard or longboard gives you more stability. In Bocas Town you will find surf schools, classes and equipment rental with ease

Surfing material

It is worth taking booties, especially since several spots in Bocas have reef or more technical bottom. It also carries long-sleeved lycra, leash, keel, keel wrench, wax for hot water and a small repair kit.

Sunscreen and sunglasses

Wear water-resistant sunscreen, preferably reef-safe, long-sleeved spandex and sunglasses for moments out of water. In Bocas, the official tourism itself recommends sunscreen, hat and long-sleeved clothing because of sun exposure.

Water consumption

Avoid drinking tap water and always prefer bottled water, even for brushing your teeth.

Transportation

In Isla Colón, cycling is a good way to get around. To go between islands or access several spots, you will depend a lot on water taxis. On islands like Carenero, you do a lot on foot, because there are no roads.

Personal pharmacy

Take essential or commonly needed medicines (it may be difficult to find them at the destination), including insect repellent, rapid dressings and painkillers. A cream to treat skin irritations can also be helpful. In Bocas, the repellent is really important because of mosquitoes and small insects that bite in the wettest areas.

Traveller Enquiry

Anyone planning to travel to tropical countries should schedule a consultation with a doctor specializing in Tropical Medicine, to assess the health risks and clarify all doubts. For Panama, health recommendations may vary according to your itinerary, and prevention against mosquito bites is especially relevant.

Documents and money

Do not forget the passport with a minimum validity of 6 months on the date of travel, the visa, if necessary, credit/debit cards and some money in US dollars, which are widely accepted.

Cameras and drones

To capture the epic waves and stunning scenery, a waterproof camera is a must. If you like to film with a drone, pay attention to the mandatory authorization that you will have to apply to the entity that governs air navigation in the Maldives.

FAQs

Clarify some doubts about Vaccines, Passport and Visa

What types of visas are available?

For travelers with a Portuguese passport, a visa is generally not required for tourism in Panama for stays up to 90 days. Upon entry, you may be asked for a valid passport, a return or onward ticket, accommodation address, and proof of financial means. As official sources consulted indicate a minimum passport validity of between 3 and 6 months, it is safest to travel with at least 6 months of validity.

What should I know about Customs?

There are strict restrictions on the entry of drugs, weapons, and other prohibited items, and amounts equal to or exceeding 10,000 USD must be declared. In Bocas del Toro, it also makes sense to be especially careful with the natural heritage: avoid taking coral, shells, or other marine elements removed from protected areas.

What about money? Do I need to exchange for local currency?

Not necessarily. Panama's currency is the balboa, but in practice, the US dollar circulates normally and has a 1:1 parity with the balboa. For Bocas del Toro, it's worth bringing some cash dollars, preferably in small denominations, in addition to a card.

What health precautions should I take?

There is no general requirement for a vaccination certificate to enter Panama, although there may be specific rules for itineraries linked to yellow fever. For Bocas del Toro, it is advisable to consult a travel doctor: the province has a risk of malaria, so mosquito protection is important, and it's advisable to review routine vaccinations and consider vaccines such as hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and typhoid fever depending on the type of trip.

What about internet and phone?

Wi-Fi is available in many accommodations and cafes, but connection quality can vary. If you need more stable internet, it's best to confirm this with your accommodation before booking or use a local SIM/eSIM.

What local traditions do I need to know?

Bocas del Toro has a very distinct identity, shaped by Afro-Caribbean influences and indigenous communities. It's worth respecting local customs, supporting community businesses, and being careful with marine ecosystems and protected natural areas.

Do I need my own surf equipment?

Not necessarily, although some airlines allow its transport, according to the conditions of each airline. The vast majority of surf-oriented resorts and hotels offer equipment rental, from boards to wetsuits.

What should I pack?

Pack light clothing, insect repellent, sunscreen, a light rain jacket, practical footwear, and some protection for water-sensitive items. Bocas has a hot tropical climate year-round, and short showers can occur at any time.

How to get there?

Panama City International Airport receives all international flights, and from there, you connect by plane to Colón Island.

Where is it located?

Geographically, Bocas del Toro is located approximately 9°15'N latitude and 82°15'W longitude.
