Seasons of the year

What is the best height
to enjoy the waves

Sri Lanka offers good surfing conditions all year round, with the best times divided between two backs

The south and southwest coast, which includes spots like Weligama, Hikkaduwa and Mirissa, has the best waves from November to April, during the dry season, when weather conditions are ideal.

The east coast, with emphasis on Arugam Bay, offers consistent waves from May to September, with July and August being the months of highest quality. Thus, you can surf in Sri Lanka all year round, choosing the right coast according to the season

Tips

Some tips and material that we recommend

Surfboards

If you are a beginner or intermediate, a funboard or minimalibu (7'0" to 8'0") will be ideal, especially for the gentle waves of the south coast, such as in Weligama and Mirissa. More advanced surfers, especially in spots like Arugam Bay, may prefer a shortboard (5'10" to 6'4") to take advantage of the long, fast waves

Surfing material

You must wear ankle boots, long-sleeved spandex and a hat or helmet. Don't forget to bring repair kit, hot water wax and scraper, as well as leashes, ropes, keels, and keel wrenches, ideally in excess, as it's hard to find locally.

Sunscreen and sunglasses

Wear a high-quality, water-resistant, preferably reef-friendly SPF 50 sunscreen to protect the skin during long surfing sessions (solar radiation, at the Equator level, is particularly intense). Polarized sunglasses are also essential for days out of the water.

Personal pharmacy

Take essential or commonly needed medicines (it may be difficult to find them at the destination), including insect repellent, quick dressings and painkillers. A cream to treat skin irritations can also be helpful.

Clothing

The climate is tropical, hot and humid, so you should wear light and breathable clothing, such as t-shirts, shorts, sundresses, swimsuits, bikinis and slippers. Don't forget to bring a light jersey for the cooler nights.

Documents and money

Do not forget the passport with a minimum validity of 6 months on the date of travel, the visa, if necessary, credit/debit cards and some money in US dollars, which are widely accepted.

Gastronomy

Food in Sri Lanka is tasty and rich in spices, offering a unique culinary experience. Be sure to try traditional dishes such as Rice and Curry, Hoppere Kottu Roti. However, it is important to be careful with the level of spiciness, as the flavors can be quite intense. Ask to adjust the degree of spiciness to your liking, especially if you are not used to very strong flavors.

Local Culture

Sri Lanka is a predominantly Buddhist country, and it is essential to respect the local culture, especially when visiting temples. Wear modest clothing, covering shoulders and knees, and remember that it is mandatory to undress before entering. Avoid pointing to Buddha statues or taking pictures with your back turned towards them, as this is considered disrespectful. Demonstrating sensitivity to these practices is essential.

Transportation

Tuk-tuks are an inexpensive way to travel short distances, but it is important to negotiate the price before starting the trip. If you prefer more autonomy, renting a motorbike is ideal for exploring local surf areas. In the case of renting a car, it is advisable to hire a driver, as the roads can be challenging.

Vibrant local culture

On the coast where there is no shortage of coral reefs, the underwater life is a boon for snorkeling and diving practitioners. In addition, these Indian waters allow the observation of dolphins and whales, in addition to swimming with turtles, helping to preserve them.
Common to the East and South coasts, the high quality resorts are located on the beach and very close to the best waves. In addition to the stunning views, hospitality is the dominant note in this Indian paradise.
In a country with a gastronomic offer that combines several styles and offers, it is necessary to highlight the varied options for those looking for a light and healthy diet. From fruit to vegetables, always with a touch of exoticism and freshness.
It is a complete destination, with emphasis on visits of historical and religious interest. The city of Galle is a good example of this, as are the various Buddhist temples, elephant sanctuaries and national parks that impress with their wildlife.
The offer of Yoga centers and Spas is an added value in this destination. They are part of the local philosophy of being well with life. Enjoy massages, treatments and yoga classes in incredible settings, with qualified professionals.
Knowing the traditions and the people who live there is the first step to knowing a destination. Historic centres, markets, restaurants, shops and bars are gateways to Sri Lanka's rich and secular culture.

FAQs

Clarify some doubts about Vaccines, Passport and Visa

What types of visas are available?

Portuguese passport holders need a visa to enter Sri Lanka. The tourist visa must be obtained in advance and online on the official portal: https://eta.gov.lk/slvisa. It is valid for up to 60 days and has a cost of 50 USD. In addition to the visa, you need a passport (minimum validity of six months on the date of travel), passport photo, travel insurance and proof of plane ticket and accommodation reservation.

What do I need to know about Customs?

Upon entering the country, there are customs restrictions on drugs, weapons, explosive materials, pornography and religious icons and symbols that can be considered offensive. At the exit, it is forbidden to export antiques without official authorization.

And what about the money? Do I need to change to the local currency?

The local currency is the Sinhala Rupee (LKR). The main credit cards are accepted in restaurants, shops and hotels, and there is also the possibility of exchanging euros in hotels, banks and exchange offices. There is a good supply of ATM machines, especially in urban centers. For purchases in street markets and local commerce, it is advisable to have cash.

What health care should I have?

Vaccination against Tetanus, Typhoid Fever, Hepatitis A and B. If you have recently traveled to destinations with a risk of yellow fever, proof of this vaccine is necessary. Protection against mosquitoes is also advised, as is the preparation of a small first aid kit.

And what about the internet and telephone?

Wi-Fi is present throughout the country, from accommodation to cafes and restaurants. The mobile network has excellent coverage, and it is advisable to buy a SIM card at the entrance to the country.

What local traditions do I need to know?

The country has two dominant religions - Hinduism and Buddhism - with Catholicism and Islamism also being represented. Sri Lanka has a tradition of religious tolerance and, in all temples, barefoot entry and the offering of flowers is advised. Respecting the silence of these spaces, wearing discreet clothes that cover shoulders and legs and not being photographed in front of Buddha statues, with Buddhist nuns and in government and military installations are other indications to take into account.

Do I need my own surf equipment?

Not necessarily, although some airlines allow their transport, according to the conditions of each of the airlines. The vast majority of resorts and hotels dedicated to surfing have a rental service of equipment, from boards to suits.

What should I bring in my luggage?

The climate is hot and humid throughout the year, with chances of rain at various times. You should opt for light and comfortable clothing, as well as waterproof coats and good hiking shoes.

How to get there?

Bandaranaike International Airport, in Colombo, is the main entrance and exit gateway. Another option is to transport by sea, by ferry, from India. From the capital, you will be able to discover the rest of the country by train, bus, car, motorcycle or tuk tuk.

Location

Where is it located?

It has a maximum length of 432 km and the maximum point of width is 224 km, occupying an area of approximately 65 thousand Km2, equivalent to about two thirds of the area of mainland Portugal.
